Description
- Active Ingredient: Olopatadine hydrochloride.
- Formulations: It is most commonly used as an ophthalmic solution (eye drops) in various concentrations (0.1%, 0.2%, 0.7%). A nasal spray form is also available for allergic rhinitis (hay fever) symptoms.
- Mechanism of Action: Olopatadine works in two ways: it acts as a selective histamine H1-receptor antagonist to block the effects of histamine (the substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms) and it stabilizes mast cells, preventing the release of other pro-inflammatory mediators.
- Indications:
- Treatment of ocular (eye) signs and symptoms of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (hay fever), including itching, redness, and swelling.
- Relief of eye itching or redness caused by exposure to allergens like pollen, ragweed, grass, animal hair, or dander.
